Several City of Ashland committees and commissions took a crack at a proposed plan for the Clarkson dock on the city’s east side in another round of long-term planning for not just the dock, but also the area surrounding it.

A first in a century
A company headed by Gerald J. Hackman, the former owner of four Ashland-area radio stations, is buying two stations in Ironwood, according to documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission.
J&J Broadcasting will pay Barracuda Broadcasting $950,000 for WJMS “US59″ (590 AM) and WIMI “The Storm” (99.7 FM). J&J is owned by Hackman, of Iron River, Wis., and John J. Nix of Highbridge, Wis. Barracuda is owned by David Winters and his father, Melvin Winters, of California.

Great Lakes water levels rebound
Great Lakes water levels are rebounding after a decade-long slump that hammered the maritime industry and even fed conspiracy theories about plots to drain the inland seas that make up nearly one-fifth of the world’s fresh surface water.
The three biggest lakes — Superior, Huron and Michigan — have risen steadily since fall 2007, when for a couple of months Superior’s levels were lowest on record and the others nearly so. Erie, shallowest of the lakes, actually exceeded its long-term average in June. So did Lake Ontario, although its level is determined more by artificial structures than nature.

The National Weather Service has released June 2009 climate statistics for the Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Treatment Plant near Ironwood. The Weather Service reports precipation was well-below normal and the monthly average temperature was below normal.
