Trollers have transitioned over to summer patterns and spots now, deeper water trolling. Most folks targeting lakers, and doing OK. Some days good, some days slow. Typical summer fishing. The flats, south channel, and many different spots up into the islands have been producing lakers and the occaisional other species, for guys working bigger spoons, and flasher combos near structure in 60-120 feet of water. Work the bait, if there is no bait, work the bottom. Get offshore to find these summer fish. One hot tactic right now, if the bite is tough, is a herring strip trolled slowly on a baithead, or a 3 fly rig, behind a flasher or dodger. We have lot’s of these terrific baits in stock! There can still occaisionally be a few fish around inside the bay, from Washburn to Long island, to Bayfield, but the majority of the catching in the summer is farther offshore. If the water surface temps are 50 or below, don’t be afraid to try some shallow lines as well. A few reports of some shallow fish still coming in here and there. Lot’s of nets around in the islands again this year, watch out for them! Remember, unfortunatly often a smaller less well marked gill net will be around the margins of a well marked trap net! With the price of fish, and the increase in the commercial quota, the number of nets has responded accordingly. Be careful out there.
The Walleye bite is transitioning more offshore in the bay too. Ashland and Washburn and over from 2nd landing to the breakwall and north towards Long Island. Spinner rigs fished on bouncers, snapwights, or the like are working, and stick / crankbaits are too. The mayfly hatch is starting to kick off so be prepared for a little tougher fishing untill it finishes up.
-Smallies are all done spawning and moving out into the main deeper structures all around the bay. Run and gun for these fish and look to weeds, drops and edges, rock and gravel, and even narrow shelves on sharp breaks. Once found I have been doing best on deep cranks like DT 10 ans 16’s, Heavy swim jigs and baits, and slow rolled spinnerbaits. Don’t forget the lindy rigs if the fish are turned off.
