Bayfield’s 4th of July Activities

Fireworks begin at dusk in Memorial Park on July 4th. Other special events this week include: Red Cliff Traditional Pow Wow, Musical performances at Big Top Chautauqua, Bayfield Heritage Walking Tours, Island Cruises on the Apostle Islands Cruise Service, Performances at STAGENORTH theater, and Greunke’s Fish Boils. Transportation authority survives state budget

The option of creating a Chequamegon Bay regional transit authority to coordinate public transportation made it past Gov. Jim Doyle’s line-item veto of the state budget.

A regional authority would bring under one umbrella Bay Area Rural Transit (BART), the county aging unit services and other transportation services. The authority had been pushed for by local lawmakers during Superior Days, as well as Rep. Gary Sherman, D-Port Wing, and Sen. Bob Jauch, D-Poplar.

If enacted, a regional transportation authority would be funded through a 0.5 percent sales tax in Ashland and Bayfield counties.
